Comment from Technician: I should make more money and have benefits. I have been "turning wrenches" for over 20 years and I only make $18 an hour and no benefits. I need more than that to be sure I can take care of my children and have any chance at retirement. Health insurance is expensive and I have to pay it myself. Comment from long time owner: The term "turning wrenches" came right off the resume. In 2019, I believe that this industry is about a lot more than just turning wrenches. Yes, we still have to turn wrenches for the bulk of our work, but that's not all we do nor should we sell ourselves short. We are technicians, and the more we think and project ourselves as technicians, and not "wrenches", the quicker we can get this industry turned around. From a pay perspective, he may be right. ReplyDeleteThis individual interviewed with us at a time when we did not have an opening for a service tech, which is what the ad indicated. We have not had an opening in our service department for the last three years, prior to Oct 2021.
DeleteWhen we do not have an opening in our store, we still run ads and we still leave the upnorthautopros.com website active, both clearly stating that we do not have a position available currently in our store. It goes on to say that Randy is always happy to help techs find a position in the industry, "even if it is at a facility other than our own".
I encourage techs to take full advantage of my 40 plus years in this industry. I am always happy to give you an hour or more of my time. I will be truthful and accurate in my advice. It doesn't mean that every tech will like what they hear.
If you already know more than me, then my thoughts
may not be helpful.
